Flash Payments leads the charge: A new era of scam-proof payments in Australia
Australian banks and fintechs have rolled out Confirmation of Payee, a name-matching service that aims to stop scammers in their tracks by checking whether the details you enter match the receiving bank’s records before a payment goes through.
It’s a straightforward tool with big potential, backed by a $100 million investment from banks as part of the Scam-Safe Accord. And Flash Payments is right at the forefront, one of the first fintechs to integrate this technology to better protect our clients and partners.
Adrian Lovney, Chief Payments and Schemes Officer at Australian Payments Plus (AP+), which built the service, said: “Confirmation of Payee is all about giving customers greater control and confidence when making payments. It’s a simple concept but adds a powerful extra layer of protection for everyday transactions.”
Australian Banking Association CEO Anna Bligh noted Australia’s edge in tackling scams: “This is critical new technology that will help protect a customer from transferring money straight into the hands of a scammer. When the rollout is complete, Australia will be one of only a handful of countries to have this technology in place across the entire banking sector.”
As a pioneering fintech, Flash Payments was highlighted in AP+’s launch video, with our logo standing out among early adopters. We’re set to roll out CoP for all our institutional clients starting August 22, 2025, at no additional cost. This service will verify payee details in real time, helping to minimise fraud and errors in Australian payments.
For us, this isn’t just about compliance - it’s about pushing the envelope to make payments safer and smoother. Being among the first fintechs to roll this out shows our drive to innovate and shield clients from scams, building on the New Payments Platform (NPP) for fast, reliable checks.
Our API partners get even more: the CoP Public API launches on August 5, 2025, letting you weave this verification into your systems (though it requires certification for access). Australian payouts failing the CoP check will auto-reject, adding that extra safeguard.
We’re thrilled to be part of this national push – as Anna Bligh put it, “It is a new weapon that banks will have at their disposal to better shield customers from losing money to scams.” We’re all in on creating a safer ecosystem at Flash Payments, one payment at a time.
